There were 36 newcomers at our 2002 National Orienteering Day event. Brunton compasses were given to the first five people who requested rental compasses. Maptech mapping software was given to two scout troops.

Multiple white courses were set out for beginners. The normal length course was designed first. A shorter course was set that could be used as a warm up before advancing to the yellow level. The third white course was a combination of the first two.

We apologize for a couple of glitches with the hanging of control flags on the morning of the event. Problems were corrected as soon as possible after they were discovered.

We know that orienteering is only one activity that is available to families for Sunday recreation. The popularity of town soccer programs affects our attendance. One family came up with a solution. They came early to our event and started out on the long white course. Part way through, they left for the son's soccer game. Later, they returned to complete their course.

In the days prior to the event, as attempt was made to map some of the areas that have slash on the ground as a result of the Hemlock harvesting on the reservoir property. We hope that this helped with some of the route selection.
