There was a definite chill in the air, and the subsequent turnout was less than in previous years. But the wintry mix that had been forecast the previous evening never materialized, and the 85 generally more serious orienteers who ventured to Rocky Woods were rewarded with almost perfect running conditions. Many excellent times were achieved on virtually all the courses, a welcome outcome for a course setter who has garnered an unwelcome but richly deserved reputation for setting courses on the difficult side.

The event was to be the NEOC introduction to e-punching. Unfortunately, the units were not delivered in time to be utilized. With luck, I will be able to offer this option at Powissett in the Fall.

Many helpful hands contributed to the success of the event, even though there were some anxious moments in the late stages of planning as injuries and illness depleted the ranks of anticipated helpers already thinned by the absence of my parents and sister due to travel plans. Fortunately, a late appeal for assistance resulted in a greatly appreciated rush of volunteers. Let me specifically give thanks to Donn Springer and Kathy McArdle, Joanne Sankus, Mikal Rosendahl and Tom Livak, Jim Pugh, Dean Sturtevant, Jim Paschetto, Pete Lane, and Mark Webb. I apologize if I neglected to recognize others who were helping out anonymously in the registration area while I was manning the remote start.
