The Rocky Woods event returned to the spring schedule after a one year hiatus. The event seems naturally placed in the early spring when the absence of foliage allows a much better appreciation of (and hence better navigation through) the relatively technical terrain. The only drawback appears to be the increased risk of raw and inclement weather, as was in evidence this year. The conditions were perhaps somewhat welcome by the more elite orienteers attempting to negotiate the relatively hilly terrain, but they probably discouraged the novice or recreational orienteers, as well as some meet workers who found it hard to get the blood flowing again after sitting in the cold for several hours.

Breaking with a dubious tradition, the course setter actually succeeded in setting courses that could be completed in the target range. There was also a substantial decrease in the number of DNFs. Perhaps this old dog is finally learning some new tricks. He even managed to post the results relatively efficiently.

The meet went off with remarkably few hitches. Apologies are offered to the White group which departed with a Yellow clue sheet and to all competitors who did not receive or appreciate the message that the map corrections were very helpful in navigating to the last control.

I wish to thank my many helpers including Donn Springer, Kathy McArdle, Jon Campbell, Stephen van Ness, Pelle Wahlstrom, Pete Beckwith, Scott Turner, Caroline Fleming, Pete Lane, Amy Schapiro, Jim Paschetto, Vanessa Wood, Katia Bertoldi and perhaps most significantly Joanne Sankus, whose impassioned plea for meet help resulted in many last-minute offers from the above list. The plentiful hands unquestionably helped make this the least taxing and most successful event I have ever directed.
