Prospect Hill Park

A beautiful early October day guaranteed a good attendance
at Prospect Hill. From the waiver sheets I counted 186 people
participating and that doesn't count a number of scouts and scout
leaders. The town of Waltham has upgraded this swath of woods
during the last years. This seems to be finished now and most
of these changes were on the map. The Prospect Hill map is now
on OCAD (thanks to Dennis Struble). The OCAD map is based on
the old map + the updated map that the Gould family created some
years ago + updates from the 2 last years. This was the first
time we were using the new map. It still needs corrections, but
this is so much easier now.
There were many e-mails before a meet. Most of these were
from new people that wanted to learn about orienteering and some
of them from different scout groups that wanted to participate
in the meet. I think our web site makes us more visible to people
since a lot of new people clearly got their information from
it. True enough there were a number of new people at the race.
This generated a number of new member applications at the race.
Unfortunately the race was hit by an accident. Susan Federer
broke her ankle while running down a steep slope on Green. She
could no longer walk and we had to get her with a car on the
other side of the park.
The courses seemed to work well in general. However, I wonder
if Orange was too difficult since a number of people didn't finish
it. This was also true for Green, but in that case a number of
people stopped running in order to help Susan Federer.
Thanks for all the helpers that made this meet a successful
one: Dennis Struble at setup and first starts, the Fleming family
at registration and setup. The Gould family helped with registration,
start and instruction, Patti Miller with instruction, Pete Beckwith
and Bob Dangel at finish.
