A new OCAD version of the Powissett map was introduced for the annual Halloween-O, updating the trail network and eliminating the infamous spiral contours that had previously limited the course-setting options. The revision allowed the start area to be moved closer to the edge of the map, which proved to be a happy development as a conflict with the Dover soccer league forced the event to use a more remote parking area. Although there was some confusion and delay as a result of this arrangement, competitors generally expressed a preference for the new system, notwithstanding the fact that there was some mandatory lengthening of the White and Yellow courses.

The weather largely cooperated, and the event was marred only (to the best of my knowledge) by the unfortunate switching of two controls common to the Green, Red and Blue courses. It was obvious from the results that this error was the source of some consternation for several of the early competitors. I extend my sincerest apologies to all who suffered as a result of this mistake.

Costumed competitors were awarded bonuses ranging from 1-5 minutes depending on creativity and, to some extent, anticipated impairment. The most impressive of the costumes belonged to the fully masked Frisco Kid, who might have remained unidentified if not for the fact that her distinctive gait was readily recognized by Ed Kotowski as she approached the finish line.

As usual, I am deeply grateful for the many efforts of my helpers including Donn Springer, Kathy McArdle, Scott Turner, Steve van Ness and my sister Amy. I also wish to thank Pete Lane who selflessly stayed until the last competitors were out of the woods and immediately unburdened me of the vast majority of the orienteering supplies. Finally, I wish to acknowledge the efforts of Jeff Saeger, Donn Springer, and especially Bob Dangel in providing an updated OCAD version of the Powissett map. I hope to see all of you and more next year.
