Event Director/Course Setter: Jeff Schapiro

Pumpkins, candy, and even a few costumed competitors marked the official return of the Powisett Halloween-O to the Fall orienteering schedule. There was even a sincere fright provided by the mature tree that fell across the start location, fortunately occurring in the 72 hours leading up to the competition and not during the actual event. Sadly, the weather was dreary early and wet late, cutting down significantly on the expected turn-out, especially for the recreational courses. The wet weather made for some anxious moments for the meet organizer as it was quickly discovered that water-soluble markers had been used to identify some of the many map corrections. Map cases were belatedly employed, but much of the damage was done. Apologies are extended to any competitors who may have suffered as a consequence.

White competitors were treated to the large boulder and water features tour, while competitors on the upper-level courses were given plenty of opportunity to exercise their climbing muscles over the several large hills on the west side of the map. The yellow course was again set to provide a view of Boston, although the overcast skies may well have thwarted the course setter's designs. Costumed competitors were given 1:00-8:00 minute bonuses depending upon the creativity of their attire. The results were a little water-logged, but it is believed that they are nevertheless accurately reported.

Donn Springer and Kathy McArdle were again instrumental in correcting and smoothing over the several problems that cropped up almost inevitably during the course of the event. As always, their helpfulness, wisdom, and (in one notable instance) good tact were very welcome. I also wish to thank the record 5 members of my family who gamely weathered the inclement conditions to ensure the success of the event. In addition, I would like to make special mention of Donn's neighbor Greg, who chanced upon the proceedings at the end of the day and was extremely helpful reclaiming the full complement of controls.
