Sunday, July 22nd was a warm but not too hot day. We offered String, White, Yellow, Orange/Brown, and a Motala course. We provided already copied maps, so that registration and starts were much easier to accomplish. A total of about 45 people, plus 5 small O'ers who did the String course, came out to do some orienteering. A lot of people were relatively new to the sport. One father said that he had cut something out from the paper about orienteering earlier in the year, but had not had a chance to try it yet, so he was glad that we were doing this. Three young people who had taken a workshop on orienteering at the Arlington library earlier in the week came out to try it 'for real.' They brought their parents along. A lot of people walking by also found out about orienteering.

Setting the White and Yellow courses was relatively easy in this small park, but setting a more difficult course is always somewhat of a challenge. We ended up setting a very long course (4.7 k), in which participants were asked to traverse the park several times. Because of the climb in that park, this could be quite a physical challenge. Individuals could stop after 12 controls (we called that the orange) or do all 15. Everyone opted to do all of them.

Two orienteers also opted to do the Motala.

This seems like a good kind of meet to do to attract newcomers to the sport of orienteering.

† A hot Pandora is a large, white fluffy dog, who had to take dips in the pond every time the group went by it, adding to the overall time of the group.
