Map Memory Training on Blue Hills West, Great Blue Hill section
September 20, 2003
Peter Amram, Event Director

This training exercise drew 14 runners who made their way about the courses by memorizing successive legs from a map strip hanging from the previous control marker. The runners carried a blank map for safety and succor, and given the informal nature of the event and the various uses to which people used their map not at all, just a peek or two, still be out there without it it seems proper to record the outcomes without excessive ceremony.

Participating on the Intermediate course (2.5km; 9 controls) were Trisha Underwood, Bob & Doug Kirschner, Peter Frykman, Jonathon Rosenfield, Jim Paschetto, Chris Bradford, and Judith Karpinski.

The Advanced course (4.5km; 14 controls) was run by Jeff Schapiro (who also ran Intermediate), J-J Cote, Tim Parson, Michael Hughes, Alex Izzo, Oren Civier, and Evan Rauch.

On both courses times ranged between one and two hours.

Participants were unanimous in encouraging that the Club do more of this sort of training.

Many thanks to Jeff Saeger, whose vetting, counsel, and bag hanging greatly enhanced the quality of this event.
