It was a nearly perfect day: No, Catherine Zeta-Jones didn't show up with a compass looking for a personal orienteering tutor; I was referring to the sunny and clear 70 degrees F day with a slight breeze which greeted the 92 participants. The breeze was important because while vetting control locations I had been repeatedly visited by mosquitos. Did you know there are different types of mosquito repellant? 7% DEET -- the buzzing sound you hear is the mosquitos laughing. 23% DEET -- the buzzing sound is the mosquitos waiting 15 minutes before dining. 95% DEET -- clears the woods of mosquitos and clears the entire aisle in the grocery store if you stop to buy refreshments.

A good number of volunteers made the day go smoothly. The only hitch was I forgot my water bottle when going out to set up a few final controls. There I was lugging heavy water gallon jugs through the woods and I didn't have anything to drink!

The course setter and I had a couple argu- -er- "discussions" about a few green and red control locations where the mapped feature didn't quite match what was in the woods; a lack of complaints and high success rate indicates those turned out okay. We think the HFAs on yellow were because although we think of a stream as an easy to follow linear feature that doesn't occur to folks just moving up from white.
