National Orienteering Day

The second annual National Orienteering Day drew 104 participants plus Tess the orienteering dog. Of the 104, 53 recorded no club affiliation, and at least 10 were newcomers. Two families indicated that they were going to join the club, and several more expressed enthusiasm about their orienteering experience. The newspaper ads brought in most of the newcomers, the club's web site was mentioned by a few callers. Fifty-two NOD events were put on by clubs across the country on the first weekend in May. The only exceptions from the designated weekend were for clubs with a big date conflict. (Like the Kentucky Derby.) Plans are already in place nationally for the third annual NOD event.

The BRUNTON Company was again the main sponsor, supplying posters, an eye catching banner, spiffy red hats for event personnel and five Brunton compasses to be given away as prizes to participants. Once the results were recorded, the result stubs went into a box and five of them were pulled out. By the time you are reading this newsletter the winners should already have received their prizes in the mail. (As long as their address was legible.)

And the winners are:

*Jenny Rudolph & Co, *Brian & Hunter Peary, *Donnelly Moran Family, * Chris Terman, and *Bob Hansen. The first three groups were on the White Course, Chris Terman was on Yellow, and Bob Hansen on Orange. I hope to see them all soon trying out the new compasses!

MAPTECH was a new sponsor this year, supplying CD's of their USGS map series for prizes. And the winners are:
*Jeff Siegrist, *Pete Lane, *Ralph Jones, and *Berman/Oleson. Congratulation to all the prizewinners! There are no official rules about groups sharing their prize, but fairness is expected of all orienteers.

There were two Trail O control sites set up for people to try. Trail O tests your map reading ability, not your physical ability. At designated viewing spots along a trail or road, a map with one feature circled is placed so people can read the map and see the control site. From two to four control flags, depending on the course level, are placed in the area. Only one is on the feature circled on the map. The orienteer must decide which flag is the correct one. On the advanced level courses, sometimes no flag is correct! "None" would be the correct answer in that case. One orienteer who uses a
wheelchair did the Trail O sites plus the White Course! Mrs. Smith did get a little help from her son Mike getting up the hills, but she got both Trail O sites correct and did the map reading for the White Course.

Thanks go to the able help crew who kept things going, welcomed and instructed a bunch of newcomers, and got everything cleaned up and picked up, including the control that was still out there because of a misunderstanding.
(Jeff Lieserson nobly volunteered to go back out again to retrieve it.) Helpers: Michael Commons, Ralph Jones, Ed & Liz Kotowski, Pete Lane, Jeff Lieserson, Ken Menzies, Patti Miller, Bill Neacy, Tim Parson, Scott Turner, Leslie Turek
