What a difference a year makes. Last year's NOD at Great Brook Farm had the remnants of Hurricane Ivan dumping several inches of rain on us. This year, Hurricane Ophelia sent just a few welcome clouds to shade us from the hot sun. One hundred and fifty five orienteers came out to try the courses. Thirty six of those people were new to orienteering. Brunton and Maptech were again sponsors for National Orienteering Day which had close to 50 events happening across the country on that weekend. Names were drawn from the list of newcomers for four Brunton compasses (the Nexus 7DNL's), and six free passes to a local NEOC event. One Maptech CD (the highest peak in each of the 50 states) went to an orienteer from the rest of the entries. Prize results are listed below. They will be mailed to winners. That's why good penmanship counts on the registration forms!

Instruction for all the newcomers was ably handled by Pete Beckwith, Ed Kotowski, and Pete Lane. Pelle Wåhlstrom and Ed Tulloch were on the Start/Finish table. Pete Lane handled registration. Ben Parson, Jon Campbell and Bill Pullman helped course setter Dean Sturtevant collect the controls. Meg and Ben Parson set up the String Course. Many thanks to the ones who helped make the event a success.

Special thanks to the Great Brook Farm park officials who are very friendly and welcoming to orienteers, and when the parking ticket machine ($2 for parking) started taking peoples money without giving any change they came right over to straighten it out.

It was a very enjoyable event with a bunch of familiar faces from UNO land and also some NEOC'ers who hadn't been seen in a while.
