What a phenomenal turn-out for the season opener! Five different courses were run by over 100 people, many of whom were orienteering for the first time. The predicted rain held off and, while the 80-degree temperature and 80% humidity weren't ideal conditions, they weren't bad either. Of course, this orienteering event would have not been possible without the mentoring and hard work of Dennis Struble, Joanne Sankus, and Jeff Saeger, as well as all those who helped with registration.

The big incident of the day was the unfortunate discovery of bees at Control 208 on the White and Yellow courses. The control was removed and the day proceeded without further incident. We hope that everybody who encountered the bees has fully recovered and won't be deterred from participating in future orienteering events.

The first place finisher on the Orange course, Jennifer Sholtis, was significantly ahead of the pack (almost 6 minutes faster than the next faster runner), which is particularly impressive because she had competed in a triathlon earlier in the day. On the Green and Red courses, Control 216 was a challenge to many due to the lack of a handle. We didn't have any trouble finding the proposed location for the control when vetting the course, but became much more sympathetic after taking an excessive amount of time in the heat, humidity, and mosquitos to retrieve the control after the meet.
