Elm Park

Elm Park
National Orienteering Day
Worcester, MA
September 18, 2005
Meet Director Siobhan Fleming

This meet was solely designed for beginners and specifically college students as Worcester is a city filled with college students. Unfortunately even Sunday afternoon does not seem to be a great time for the college community to come out and try Orienteering, but alas we did get a few newcomers and all of them enjoyed it greatly so all in all it was a beneficial event. Hopefully next year we can get a bigger turnout.

There were only two courses as Elm Park is a very small park with lots of trails and very few other features. There was a short beginner course of about 1km and a longer slightly more advanced course of about 1.5km. Ceire Fleming managed to score the winning time a mere 8 seconds faster than Kyle Lewis and Jill Wise on the beginner course. The intermediate course was won by Kyle Lewis who started Orienteering on Sunday and was a winner of a Brunton compass. The other winners of compasses were Jill Wise, Kristen Wollam, and the Fijalkowski group. A Brunton cap was won by Ceire Fleming and the Maptechs were raffled off to Adam Bricker-Caplan and Brenna Levitin.

There are many people to thank for the success of the meet. I would like to thank Caroline Fleming for getting everything off the ground while I was away this summer without her effort this meet would not have happened. Another person this couldn't have happened without is Liz Kotowski who got permission to hold the meet and organized the map update. I would also like to thank Ceire Fleming and Desmond Fleming for doing registration, Sam Levitin for doing instruction, Daniel Levitin for pulling the raffle tickets, Theo McDonald for helping with start and finish and Bob Dangel for updating the OCAD map. Additionally I would like to thank John Fredrickson and Ceire Fleming for helping pick up controls and Theo McDonald for helping me set controls.

Thanks to all my volunteers, I never realized how much work a meet even a small one took and I'm glad it was a success.
