CT Scout Orienteering Weekend

Almost 200 scouts and scout leaders from 19 different troops throughout CT and MA took part in the second CT scout-O at the J.N. Webster Scout Reservation in Ashford, CT. On Saturday NEOC volunteer guides trained scouts in basic orienteering skills on five courses. Several scouts worked on their orienteering merit badge requirements, including those that planned courses for the evening score-O and future NEOC events. The evening's Scrabble score-O was an orienteering variant of the popular word game in which participants searched for letters to complete selected words. The troops found out that it pays to be on time as a 10 point per minute overtime penalty took Troop 203 from second place to last and a triple word bonus earned by Troop 1 for returning in under 30 minutes helped them to victory. Sunday's regular club event found many of the scouts staying over to run one of the six available courses along with 44 non-scout participants.

Many thanks to the Friends of Webster who prepared lunch on both days. A bowl of their chicken soup was a welcome sight for many soaked orienteers on a rainy Sunday.
