Whitehall Canoe-O
Hopkinton, Massachusetts
July 29, 2006
Event Directors: Stephen Miller and Seth Miller
On a hot and sunny day, 39 competitors in 22 boats arrived
at Whitehall Reservoir to showcase their canoe orienteering skills.
The competitors had four courses to choose from - Short, Medium,
Advanced and Expert, although no one chose the Short course.
The Expert course used two different maps. After completing the
first map, a competitor returned to the finish line to retrieve
the second map. This second map was the same one used for the
Advanced course. The Short and Medium courses shared a common
map.
Amongst the competitors on the Medium course were two families
with young children, which is always nice to see. After most
of the competitors finished the Medium course, late starters
Peter Frykman and Kate O'Brien arrived and aced the course with
impressive time.
On the Advanced course, first time orienteer Shawn Burke had
the fastest time. Drawing on his years of experience with backcountry
canoe travel, he was able to negotiate the course faster than
anyone else. Bill Pullman actually finished with a slightly faster
time, but without his boat. After retrieving his boat his time
was no longer the fastest. Wes Denering had a pretty impressive
showing considering he was the last boat on the course and collected
all of the controls as he went.
On the Expert course, the competition between the top two
finishers was tight. At the map exchange, the team of Jeff Schapiro
and John Hansman team was just four minutes behind. Aims Coney
and J.J. Cote waited nervously at the finish to see if their
time was good enough. In the end, it was by just seven minutes.
Also on the Expert course was first-timer Tom Bryan. He rowed
his Adirondack guide boat making it difficult to spot the controls.
Even though he was on the course a long time, it was clear at
the finish that he thoroughly enjoyed himself.
Special thanks go to the people who helped with the meet.
Pelle Wahlstrom, Marcia Steele and Jeff Schapiro helped with
registration and kept things running smoothly. Aims Coney and
Wes Denering helped by collecting the controls at the end of
the day.
