Boojum Rock

Boojum Rock

We had a great turnout for the Easter Boojum Rock meet. The weather cooperated: cool and cloudy but no rain as had been forecast. 126 people orienteered on
77 teams. Many teams not only completed their courses, but also went for the extra 4 Easter egg controls.

We designed the advanced courses to minimize the possible use of trails; at Boojum this means having pretty short legs. Then we decided to eliminate the
trails from the map; we could do this thanks to having the OCAD file (we've run out of offset-printed maps for Boojum, and probably won't invest in printing new
ones at least until the map gets updated). Some people found the lack of trails frustrating. We heard that others may have actually found it helpful. These are folks who might normally stop for a moment to figure out which trail they've just come upon. All in all, our impression was that most people thought removing the trails from the map was a great way of increasing the navigational challenge when orienteering in a relatively small area.

This was a fun meet to put on. It was the first full-SWYOGRB meet we've directed, and it was fun working together as a threesome. Adam and Barb flagged half the controls on very rainy April Fool's Day. It was fun to be in the woods with water welling out of the ground; every trail was a stream, and all low-lying areas were ponds. Dave discovered that the storage locker is not accessible 24 hours a day. Adam shopped for Easter eggs and other supplies.

Thanks so much to the volunteers who helped us at registration, finish and picking up controls. Tanya did a great job organizing the finish cards. Welcome to New England, Tanya! Isabel spent five hours setting up, working the finish, hiding Easter Eggs,
and more. A special thanks goes to Evan Rauch who not only suffered from the mislabeled second-to-last red control, but also - after volunteering to help pick up
controls - was inadvertently asked to pick up a control that wasn't there. Thanks Evan! (And sorry!)
