Mt. Norwottuck/The Notch
Amherst/Granby, MA
April 10, 2005
Event Director/Course Setter: Jeff Schapiro
In addition to the main Billygoat event, several recreational
courses were offered at the Mt. Norwottuck meet. In an act of
strikingly impaired judgment, the meet director undertook setting
both the recreation and main courses entirely on his own. As
a result of the predictable flurry of last minute crises, the
meet director found himself out in the woods placing the last
few recreational control markers several minutes after the start
of the recreational events. This brings us to the tale of Kimberly
Buescher & Bob Massaro, a pair of eager racers from the EORC
club which graced the event with several competitors. Kim and
Bob grabbed the first possible starting time on the Long White
course and set out at an aggressive pace. They navigated flawlessly
to the site of the 6th control where they found
nothing.
They proceeded to the next trail intersection confirming their
position, then retreated to the 5th control, again failing to
locate the 6th control.
At this point, they encountered a subsequent competitor, to
whom they voiced their belief that the 6th control was missing.
The trio then returned to the location of the 6th control and
found the readily visible control marker in its designated location.
Kimberly and Bob suffered the teasing torments of their new
companion as they proceeded briskly to the finish. It was only
some time later when the details of their experience became known
to the meet director that he was able to confirm that the control
marker had indeed magically appeared between the time of their
first search and their subsequent return with their new colleague.
It is hoped that this admission in the official results will
restore any damage to their reputations that may have been incurred
at the time of the event. Their time below includes a 5:00 adjustment
that may, in fact, be insufficient to account for the loss of
time they suffered.
