The Saturday event of the NEOC 30th anniversary weekend had
the benefit of essentially perfect weather, sunny and cool, but
warm enough in the sun to stand afterwards around and discuss
route choices without getting chilled. This was the second time
that this map was used, the first having been the USOF Relay
Champs two years ago. Due to the attraction of the brewery tour
and party afterwards, many longtime members of NEOC turned out,
including some from quite far away. Even the bugs cooperated;
it appears that this may have been the first big blackfly hatch,
but they didn't show up until most people had finished, and they
didn't seem to be ready to bite yet.
There are some of us who are capable of designing courses
and getting controls in place (in the nick of time), but who
aren't very good at organizing people. Due to the fact that
a lot of very experienced orienteers were coming to the meet
because of the party afterwards, virtually all of the volunteers
that Liz lined up to help me out were old hands, who were well
acquainted with the operation of an orienteering meet. When
I got back from putting out the last water stop, I found that
although I had just parked my car with the meet equipment in
the back, a fully operational registration/start/finish area
had magically bloomed, and it seemed like everything was happening
by itself. What a treat!
Many thanks to the fine crop of helpers who I had for this event,
