A hundred courses were run, walked or strolled during the National Orienteering Day Event at Houghtons Pond in Milton MA. Over half of the people on the White course were newcomers trying orienteering for the first time. Several went out for a second course after completing White. Three scouts from Brewster, after making some good recoveries on the White course, decided that they had gotten the hang of it. They all finished the Yellow course in a shorter time than the White course! Way to go scouts!

Twenty ROTC students from BU were taking advantage of a good map training
opportunity. Since they were all new to orienteering they ran the Yellow course first. Later, CPT. Doherty picked out some harder controls from the Orange course to give them a tougher assignment. After finishing the courses they could be heard singing in cadence as they marched out the road by Houghtons Pond.

Five Brunton compasses, two Maptech CDs, and ten Free Passes to a Local NEOC Event were awarded. There were random drawings during the day to determine the winners. Calvin Underwood, Eric Reuther and Robert Dalgarno were there to accept their new compasses. The rest of the prizes will be mailed to the winners homes. (Another reason to print legibly on the registration form!)

Many thanks to the people who helped and made this event a success: (first time) course setter, Peter Frykman - compliments were received for his courses; Pete Lane and Pelle Wahlstrom who helped setup for early instruction for the ROTC group; Pete Lane also handled Start/Finish/Results for most of the event; Pete Beckwith and Pelle on Registration; Patti Miller and Pete Frykman for instruction; Janet Ryan - Finish/Results; Jeff Saeger and Judy Karpinski for packing up Registration; Peter Frykman and Oren Civier for control pickup. You probably noticed some names repeated for different jobs. An event director quite often doesn't see all the people who pitch in when the need is there. Thanks to all the volunteers, and a special thanks to the course setter. Between the time he finished designing the courses, and then hanging the controls for the event, he had his appendix removed. Orienteering is probably not everyone's idea of R & R. :)
