Ian and I awoke at 3 am to the startling sound of thunder and the non-stop flashing of lightning. I lay in bed wondering about the NEOC cancellation policy, and the sanity of standing under the registration tent in the middle of a lightning storm. Fortunately, by the time I was putting out the signs at 7 am, the sun had appeared from behind a canopy of clouds, and I knew (o.k. hoped) it was going to be a lovely day for an orienteering event.

Over ninety folks came out to enjoy the day. The woods were green and wet (it is June in New England after all), and the buzzing of mosquitoes provided subtle encouragement to keep moving. Many of the courses allowed participants to enjoy the best that Estabrook has to offer – swamps. Still, despite the wet conditions, people generally seemed in good spirits. Ian and I hope that people enjoyed the courses (or at the very least had a good work-out), and had a chance to view the habitat of the resident beavers.

We would like to thank our many wonderful volunteers, who made running an O-event a very pleasant experience. Andy Hall and Ross Smith put out controls in the dampest conditions of the day (Ross also prepared and delivered the controls); Caroline Fleming, Hop Holmberg, Kelly Guarino, Anna Stringham, David Yee, Marsha Westerberg, and Roy Westerberg worked registration; Jim Paschetto (the e-punch and results guru), Bill Pullman, Joanne Sankus, Andy McIlvaine, and Scout Troop 4 managed the start/finish and
results. Alex Jospe, Katia Bertoldi, and Giovanni Berlanda picked up controls in the heat and humidity of the afternoon, and Joanne Sankus stayed to the end to help pack up and deliver the goods to the event the next day. We should also mention that Helen Finlayson and Neil Forrest (family from England) prepared map bags and control descriptions for us the night before and watched our son, Mori, during the day of the meet. It was a pleasure working with you all, and talking to volunteers and competitors alike.
