35th Billygoat Run

Holyoke Range State Park, Amherst, MA
Sunday, April 21, 2013
11:00 AM mass start
Map: 1:10,000, 5m contours

The 2013 Billygoat returns to its roots in Western Massachusetts, with this year’s race just across the Connecticut River from Mt. Tom, the site of the original Billygoat Run in 1979.

We will use the Earl’s Trails map, first used last May for the Western Mass 5 Day. For those of you that were at the 5 Day, the finish area will be the same, but there is a lot more of the map than what was used for the 5 Day. The area is part of the north slope of the Holyoke Range, hilly of course, but with generally good runability and visibility and very few rock features. Part of the area has a maze of mountain bike trails.

This year’s course will be approximately 12 km with 600 meters of climb (and descent). As per Billygoat tradition, you can skip one control, with the exception that you cannot skip control #1. The course is designed for advanced navigators. Anyone finishing in three and a half hours or less will earn the Billygoat shirt, designed this year by Patrick Nuss. The overall time limit for the course is 4 hours.

There will also be a Billygoat Lite (tastes great, less exhausting) for those looking for a Billygoat experience on a smaller scale, with the course approximately 7-8 km and 400 meters of climb. This will be the same course as the Billygoat except omitting controls 2 to 7. For the Billygoat Lite, you can also skip two non-consecutive controls, with the exception of #1. Note that in addition to competing, you may also get to spectate as some of the faster orienteers in the Billygoat go by late in the course. The Billygoat Lite is also a mass start at 11:00 AM.

SportIdent timing will be used. Any type of SI-card can be used. If you do not have an SI-card, a NEOC loaner will be assigned to you. If you lose a loaner SI-cards, you'll be asked to reimburse NEOC $40.

Start the weekend with Saturday's Speedy Goat sprint relay.
