The New England Orienteering Club Proudly Announces

The NEOC Spring Rock Festival
and 2006 US Intercollegiate Orienteering Championships

April 8 & 9

Day 1: Short Course Event and Sprint Relay, Wells State Park, Sturbridge, MA
Day 2: Classic Distance Event, Mashamoquet Brook State Park, Pomfret, CT

Standard USOF age classes plus individual and team competition in the Varsity and JV classes. The top three eligible men and women in the Varsity class will be named to represent the US at the 2006 World University Orienteering Championships in the Slovak Republic this summer.

Start times are now available.
The walk to start on Day 1 is 500 m, all flat (10 min). The walk to start on Day 2 is 700 meters, with some climb at the end (15-20 min). Parking will be near the Finish both days.

Competition (see Course Information below)
Two-day combined-time competition, with a three-person Sprint Relay on Saturday afternoon (sign up form in pdf format).  For advanced levels, the Short courses on Saturday morning will be approximately 2/3 normal length and the Classic courses on Sunday will be 1/3 longer.  Individual awards will be given to the top three finishers in each class. Click here to see a list of confirmed entries.

Varsity men and women will compete on Red and Green Y, respectively. JV men and women will both compete on Orange.  Everyone entered in the Varsity and JV classes is eligible for individual USOF Championship medals and engraved plaques.

Varsity and JV teams of 3 to 5 people from the same college can include both men and women. Each Varsity and JV team will select 3 people to run the Sprint Relay officially.  Each team's three best times on the Short course, three best times on the Classic course, and overall Relay time will be added together to calculate IC team awards.   Trophies will be awarded to the top three Varsity and JV teams.

Varsity competitors who belong to the same USOF club and have declared that club to be their primary club can compete for the traveling Club Championship Cup, regardless of whether they attend the same school.  USMAOC is the current holder of the cup and CSU won it in 2004.   Club teams must have 3 to 5 students on them and can be the same as Varsity teams if everyone on a Varsity team also belongs to the same club.  Scoring for the Club Championship will be based only on each team's three best times on the Short course combined with the team's three best times on the Classic course.

The Sprint Relay is open to everyone and will be a fundraiser for the 2006 US World University Orienteering Championships team.  The relay will be part of the scoring for the Varsity and JV team competition.  For everyone else it is intended as a fun, informal event (and good practice for the Sprint Series).   Relay legs will be fast, partly in the woods, partly in the campground area. All controls in the three-person relay will be appropriate for orienteers at the Orange level and above. Legs will be mixed so each team will run all three loops but not in the same order. A two-person W/Y relay will also be offered.  Orienteers who graduated from the same college might consider putting together an alumni team (in keeping with the Intercollegiate theme).  Delicious chocolate prizes to the fastest three teams in the Varsity, JV, College Club, 3-point, 6-point, 9-point, and W/Y categories!

To form 3-point, 6-point, and 9-point relay teams, use the following numbers:
1 point for ages 17-20 or 35-49;
2 points for ages 15, 16, or 50-59;
3 points for less than age 15 or 60+.

Females of any age get an additional 2 points.  Thus, a 16 year-old female would be a 4-point runner, a 47-year-old male would be a 1-point runner, and a 23-year-old male would be given 0 points.   The members of a 3-point relay team need to have at least 3 points collectively; a 6-point team would need at least 6 points collectively, etc.

Day 1

Wells State Park, Sturbridge, MA.  2005 map with recent updates.  Short course AM: 1:7,500, 5 m; Sprint relay PM: 1:5,000, 5m.  Typical New England glacial topography, including a mix of hills with large rock features, and flatter previously farmed areas with stone walls. There is an extensive trail network. The forest has a mix of runnability from open pine woods to mixed hardwoods with small underbrush. There are also several water features and some dense patches of mountain laurel.

Directions: Take the Mass Turnpike (I-90) to Exit #9/Sturbridge or take I-84 E from Hartford. Get off I-84 at Exit #3A and follow Rt. 20 E for 1.7 miles. Turn L onto Rt. 49 N and go 1 mile. Turn L at the Wells State Park entrance sign and go straight for 1 mile until you reach the park.

Note: The lot is small, so please carpool to the park if possible. You can leave extra cars in the Wal-Mart plaza on the N side of Rt. 20, approx. 2.5 miles from Wells.

Day 2

Mashamoquet Brook State Park, Pomfret, CT. 2001 map with recent updates. Classic distance: 1:10,000, 5 m. The terrain is mostly fast and relatively open for CT, with a moderate trail network. The NW part is flatter with fewer features; the SE section is steeper, rockier and more intricate.

Location: The park entrance is on Rt. 44, 6 miles E of Rt. 198.

Event Center
YMCA Camp Woodstock, Camp Road (off Rt. 198), Woodstock Valley, CT, between the two venues. This is the location for Friday night packet pick up, relay registration, final Intercollegiate team registration, group lodging, and the Saturday night dinner. Packets and relay registration will also be available at Wells State Park on Saturday morning.

Camp Woodstock is a beautiful year-round facility on Black Pond with great food and lots of recreational opportunities.  We hope that many orienteers -- especially college students and juniors -- will choose to stay here for the weekend and make this a real social occasion.

Directions from CT and MA:  Take I-84 from Hartford or the Mass Turnpike (I-90) to Exit 74 (Union, CT/ Holland, MA).  Follow signs for Rt. 171 E.  Follow Rt. 171 for 4.6 miles.  It will make a couple of sharp turns and take you through Bigelow Hollow.  When you reach the fork of Rts. 197 and 171, bear left onto Rt. 197 and go 1.8 miles to the intersection of Rts. 197 and 198.  Turn right and go one mile south on Rt. 198.  The Camp entrance will be on the left.  Follow signs to the Event Center.  Camp Woodstock is approximately 16 miles SE of Sturbridge.

Directions from RI:   From the junction of I-295 and US Rt. 44 near Providence, follow Rt. 44 W for 22 miles.  Turn right onto Rt. 171 W and follow it for 10 miles to the intersection with Rt. 198.  Make a sharp right turn onto Rt. 198 and follow it north for 2 miles.  The Camp entrance will be on your right.  Follow signs to the Event Center.  Camp Woodstock is approximately 47 miles from TF Green Airport in Providence/Warwick, RI.
